PC Part Compatibility: The Checklist That Prevents a Dead Build

The short version

A "dead build" is almost never a dead part. It is two parts that were never going to work together: a CPU the board can't boot until it's updated, RAM that won't train at its rated speed, a graphics card 15 mm too long for the case. Every one of those is visible on a spec sheet before you spend a cent.

Check 1: Does the CPU match the socket and chipset?

The CPU's socket must match the motherboard's socket exactly, and the chipset must be one the CPU supports. AMD's current desktop socket is AM5; Intel's is LGA1851.

Beginner trap: assuming "same brand" means "fits." A Ryzen 5 9600X will not drop into an AM4 board even though both say AMD.

Check 2: Will the board boot that CPU out of the box?

A motherboard can list a CPU as supported but only after a BIOS update — and some boards can't update without a working CPU already fitted. Buy a board manufactured after your CPU launched, or one with USB BIOS Flashback.

Beginner trap: buying a launch-window motherboard for a CPU released a year later and discovering it needs a chip you don't own to update.

Check 3: Is the RAM the right kind, capacity and on the QVL?

Match the memory type (DDR5 for all current platforms), buy a two-stick kit, and pick one that appears on your board's QVL for your CPU generation.

Beginner trap: buying four sticks or a very high-speed kit for AM5. Four single-rank sticks or DDR5-7200 often forces the memory controller down to a lower stable speed than a clean 2×16 GB 6000 kit.

Check 4: Does the GPU physically fit?

Compare the card's length, height and slot count to the case's stated clearances, and leave margin for front fans or a radiator.

Beginner trap: trusting the case's headline number. A 335 mm limit with a 330 mm card leaves no room for the power connector's bend radius.

Check 5: Is the PSU big enough, and does it have the right connectors?

Add up real component wattage, add headroom for GPU transient spikes, then confirm the PSU has the exact connectors your CPU and GPU need.

Beginner trap: sizing to average draw. GPUs pull short spikes well above their rated board power; a PSU with no headroom trips its protection and the system reboots under load.

Check 6: Do the cooler and radiator clear everything?

Check air-cooler height against the case, radiator size against the case's mount list, and both against RAM and top-connector clearance.

Beginner trap: buying a 360 mm AIO for a case that only lists 240/280 mm up top, then finding the fan screws hit the top panel.

Our bench process for a new parts list is to build a "compatibility sheet" first: every part's key dimension and interface pulled from the manufacturer page into one table, then a dry fit of the cooler and GPU in the actual case before the board is screwed down. Across recent builds, the checks that most often force a change are cooler-height versus case and GPU-length versus front fan — roughly one list in four needs a swap on one of those two lines.

Compatibility is a paperwork problem, not a luck problem. Twenty minutes on spec pages with this checklist removes essentially every "it won't post" scenario that isn't a genuinely faulty part.

What is the single most common PC compatibility mistake?

A CPU newer than the motherboard's shipped BIOS, on a board without USB BIOS Flashback. Buy a board made after your CPU launched, or one with Flashback.

Does RAM have to be on the motherboard QVL?

Not strictly, but on DDR5 it is worth it. A kit matching a QVL entry for your CPU generation is the most reliable way to hit DDR5-6000 with EXPO on the first boot.

How do I know if a graphics card fits my case?

Compare card length to the case's max GPU clearance, subtract 20–30 mm for a front fan or radiator, and check the case has enough slots for a 3–3.5-slot card.
