The short version

Most "my PC is outdated" situations are really "I picked a dead-end socket and an underspecced power supply." Get those two right and upgrading is a 30-minute GPU swap or a BIOS-update-and-drop-in CPU. Get them wrong and a GPU upgrade drags the board, RAM and PSU with it.

Common mistake: overspending on the CPU to "future-proof." A mid-range chip two generations from now typically matches today's flagship for half the money. The CPU is not where future-proofing budget belongs — the socket is.

How to pick a socket that lasts

Choose a platform that still has at least one unreleased CPU generation planned for the same socket, and a chipset with the I/O you'll want in three years.

Common mistake: buying the cheapest board on a living socket. If it has one M.2 slot and weak VRMs, your "upgrade path" ends at the first bigger CPU or second SSD.

How to size the PSU once

Pick a power supply that comfortably runs a GPU one tier above the one you're buying, on the current ATX 3.1 standard, from a reputable manufacturer.

Common mistake: buying exactly enough watts for today's GPU. The next card up, plus its transient spikes, pushes a no-headroom PSU into its protection circuit and the system reboots under load.

When to actually pull the trigger on a GPU upgrade

Upgrade the graphics card when it can no longer hit your target frame rate at your monitor's resolution, and a replacement gives roughly 50% more performance at a price you'll accept.

Common mistake: upgrading the GPU every generation. Skipping one generation and doing a bigger jump costs less per frame gained and wastes less time reselling old cards.

A worked example

Say you're building a 1440p machine today around a Ryzen 5-class CPU and a Radeon RX 9070 / RTX 5070-class GPU.

When it's a rebuild, not an upgrade

Some changes drag the rest of the system with them. Recognize these before you start so you can budget for the whole job rather than a single part.

Common mistake: budgeting for one part and discovering mid-swap that it needs two others. Check the socket, the PSU wattage and connectors, and the case clearance before you buy the headline part.

In our testing

We track this by re-benching older builds against their drop-in upgrades on the same board and PSU: baseline the original config in a fixed set of games at the target resolution, then swap only the CPU (after a BIOS update) or only the GPU and re-run the identical test, logging average and 1% low frame rates and the total time and cost of the swap.
