Where to Put Your PC: Room Airflow and Dust

The short version

A PC breathes. It pulls cool room air through a filter, runs it over the hot parts, and pushes it out the back and top. Where you put the case decides how clean and how cool that air is. The two failure modes are the same ones I see on almost every desk: the tower shoved hard against a wall or into a closed desk cubby so it re-breathes its own heat, and the tower sitting on carpet so it inhales dust and fibers until the fans clog.

Give every vent at least 3 inches of clear air
Leave a minimum of 3 inches (75 mm) of open space at every intake and exhaust face of the case. A fan can only move the air it can reach; choke the intake and the whole cooling chain backs up.
Find your case's airflow direction first. Most modern towers pull in through the front and the bottom, and push out through the rear and the top. So a front-mesh case needs clearance in front — don't face it into a wall or a desk leg. A case with a bottom-mounted PSU or bottom intake fans needs air under it, which carpet blocks completely. The rear exhaust fan wants the same 3 inches behind it, or it just recirculates hot air against the wall and pulls it back around.
More clearance is always better. If you can give the intake 6–12 inches, temps and fan noise both drop because the fans don't have to work as hard to draw the same volume.
Do this: point the front of the case toward open room, not toward a wall. Not that: don't wedge the tower between a desk leg and a wall with an inch to spare on the intake side.
Why a closed cabinet cooks the tower
A closed desk cabinet or cubby traps the exhaust heat and feeds it straight back into the intake, so the same PC runs several degrees Celsius hotter and the fans ramp louder to compensate. It's the single worst common placement.
Inside a sealed enclosure, the case exhaust has nowhere to go. Air temperature in the cubby climbs, the intake now pulls warm air instead of room air, and every component sits closer to its thermal limit. In a warm room I've seen a mid-tower gain roughly 6–10 °C on CPU and GPU just from being moved from open air into a closed cubby with the door shut — and the fans got noticeably louder because the curve responded to the higher temps.
If a cubby is genuinely your only option: take the back panel off the cabinet entirely, leave the front door open or remove it, and ideally cut a hole for a small exhaust fan at the top rear of the enclosure. At that point it's basically a shelf, which is fine.
Do this: open or remove the cabinet back and door. Not that: don't run the PC in a closed cubby "just while gaming" — that's exactly when it's making the most heat.
Floor or desk
Both work. On the floor, lift the case off carpet onto a stand or feet. On the desk, keep the intake clear of the wall. The choice is about dust, noise and space, not performance.

Do this: lift any floor PC off the carpet. Not that: don't park it in the footwell where your feet kick dust into the intake all day.
Where the dust comes from
Most PC dust is carpet fiber, skin and fabric lint, and it settles heaviest in the first foot above the floor. Placement decides how much of it your intake sees.
The big sources: carpet and rugs directly under or beside the case, a bed or upholstered furniture nearby, pet areas, and open windows onto a busy street. Forced-air heating vents blowing toward the PC also load the filters faster. You can't remove all of it, but you can keep the case out of the worst of it — off the floor, away from the bed, not right under a supply vent.
Positive-pressure setups — where intake fans move more air than exhaust fans — help a lot here, because air only enters through filtered openings instead of getting sucked in through every unfiltered gap. That's an in-case tuning job, but placement is what makes the filters' job manageable in the first place.
Do this: keep the intake side facing the cleanest, most open part of the room. Not that: don't set the tower next to the bed skirt or a fabric couch.
Filter and cleaning cadence
Check and brush the intake filters every 4–6 weeks, and do a full fan-and-heatsink clean every 3–6 months. A clogged front filter can raise internal temps by several degrees and force the fans louder well before you'd notice by looking.
- Every 4–6 weeks: pull the front and bottom filters, brush or rinse them (dry fully before refitting), wipe the case feet and the area under the tower.
- Every 3–6 months: power down, take it outside or to a hard floor, and use a soft brush plus short bursts of compressed air on the CPU cooler fins, GPU heatsink, radiator, and every fan. Hold fan blades still so they don't spin up and back-feed the header.
- Once a year: check whether thermal performance has drifted; repasting is usually a 3–5 year job, not annual.
If you have pets or carpet, halve those intervals. If the PC is on the desk on a hard surface in a low-dust room, you can often stretch them.
Do this: set a recurring phone reminder for the filter check. Not that: don't blow dust deeper into the case indoors — take it outside.
Verdict and upkeep
Placement is free cooling. Give every vent 3 inches of clear air, point the intake at open room, lift the case off carpet, and keep it out of any closed cabinet. Do that and the same hardware runs a few degrees cooler and a few decibels quieter with no parts bought.
Upkeep: filter brush every 4–6 weeks, deep clean every 3–6 months, more often with pets or carpet. Keep enough cable slack that you can slide the tower out without unplugging anything — if cleaning is a chore, it won't happen.
